Western Digital Shifts Strategy to Bigger Hard Drives, Says CEO Irving Tan

Western Digital (WD) CEO Irving Tan stated in an interview with Bloomberg Technology on Wednesday, “ We don’t need to increase unit capacity – what we’re doing is using technology to increase hard drive capacity .”

Irving Tan also mentioned that in addition to AI infrastructure investment, video surveillance will also be a major driver of storage demand. This “dual-engine” structure gives Western Digital more confidence in market demand.

In its Q2FY26 financial report at the end of January this year, the company stated that its 2026 calendar year capacity was almost sold out, and two of its five major customers had agreements that extended until 2027, while another extended to 2028.
