Hyundai to Invest 10 Trillion in AI, Hydrogen Energy, and Robotics

According to a report by the South Korean media outlet Chosun Ilbo today (February 23), Hyundai Motor Group has confirmed plans to invest 10 trillion won over the next five years to develop a center in the Saemangeum area of Gangwon Province, South Korea, specifically for future AI (artificial intelligence), hydrogen energy, and robotics businesses.

The report states that Hyundai Motor Group is expected to sign a memorandum of understanding this week with South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources, as well as the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment and other relevant agencies, to formally announce its investment plan.

The agreement stipulates that Hyundai Motor Group will invest approximately 10 trillion won in the region starting this year to establish facilities for new businesses within five years, with support and cooperation from various South Korean government departments and local governments. Executives from the South Korean government, local authorities, and Hyundai Motor Group are expected to attend the signing ceremony.

The report mentions that Hyundai Motor Group’s core strategy is to establish three pillars for future growth in Saemangeum: artificial intelligence, hydrogen energy, and robotics . Notable projects include an AI data center, a large-scale water electrolysis hydrogen production facility, and a robotics production facility. Currently, discussions are underway to establish a solar power system to support these initiatives, applying the principle of “local production, local consumption,” allowing the company to procure affordable and environmentally friendly energy in the region to power the AI data center, hydrogen energy projects, and other projects.

Hyundai Motor Group is also pushing to build a multi-billion won robotics factory in Saemangeum. The group gained widespread attention with its humanoid robot Atlas, which it unveiled at CES 2026.
