Sony Unveils PS5 Pro With PSSR Support

Sony announced that the upgraded PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) feature for the PS5 Pro is officially online today, with comprehensive improvements in image stability and detail clarity.

This software update is scheduled to be rolled out in phases starting at 1 PM Beijing time today, and will gradually cover all users over the next few days. PS5 Pro users can also manually check for and install the update through system settings.

PSSR is an AI-based super-resolution technology that analyzes each frame of an image pixel-by-pixel when zooming in on game visuals. This upgrade will improve image precision and dynamic image stability in PS5 Pro games, and developers will have greater flexibility in balancing performance and image quality on the PS5 Pro.

Several game developers have already begun integrating the new PSSR into their titles and have shared initial feedback.

  • Konami announced that Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill f will be the first to be upgraded with new technology, with significant results.

  • EA stated that the benefits of the upgraded PSSR apply to a variety of game genres, including large-scale RPGs such as Dragon Age: Guardians of the Shadows.

  • Remedy Entertainment will introduce a new version of PSSR technology for Control and Alan Wake 2, significantly improving image stability and dynamic clarity in both titles.

  • In addition, Ninja Theory has adopted an upgraded version of PSSR technology in Hellblade II: Senua’s Tale, further optimizing the game’s visual performance on the PS5 Pro with the latest technology.

  • Square Enix introduced a new PSSR for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, further refining the graphics of this PS5 Pro game.

  • Koei Tecmo will upgrade the PSSR technology for Nioh 3 and Rise of Ronin, further enhancing environmental detail and image clarity in these action games with their dynamic visual style.

  • In addition to the already released Resident Evil: Requiem, Capcom will also use an upgraded version of PSSR in Monster Hunter: Wildlands and Dragon Dogma 2, further optimizing the image clarity and stability of the two titles.

  • In addition to the aforementioned titles, Red Desert will launch with support for the upgraded PSSR technology on March 20th. Assassin’s Creed Shadow and Cyberpunk 2077 will also receive patches to support the new technology in the coming weeks.

The new PSSR algorithm and its neural network technology originate from the Amethyst project, a collaboration between Sony and AMD. This upgrade represents the latest achievement of their joint development, and future AMD FSR updates will incorporate these improvements, benefiting more gamers worldwide.
