Microsoft PowerToys to Add WinPos for Better Window Control

Tech media NeoWin published a blog post yesterday (April 8) reporting that Microsoft plans to upgrade the PowerToys tool and add a WinPos module to address the inconvenience of traditional window management operations in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

According to a blog post cited by Free Tech News, while Windows 11 boasts modern window management features such as snap-to-click assistance, traditional methods still have significant drawbacks for users accustomed to mouse operation. When moving or resizing windows, users must precisely click on the title bar or narrow edges, which is difficult on high-resolution monitors and prone to aiming errors.

To address this interaction pain point, the Microsoft PowerToys project team proposed developing the WinPos module. Its core mechanism allows users to hold down the Alt key and then click the left or right mouse button anywhere within the window to quickly move or resize it. This improvement completely eliminates the reliance on the title bar, effectively solving the problem of difficulty in clicking the title bar caused by tabs, search boxes, and other elements often occupying it.

Technically, WinPos is inspired by the open-source tool AltDrag, which offered similar functionality on the Windows platform but has been discontinued for over 10 years. PowerToys plans to reintegrate this classic feature, giving it new life in modern systems.
